How About a Detox?

It’s January, which means detoxing is in full swing for many people - avoiding certain foods, drinks, or activities to start the new year off on the right foot. But what exactly does detoxing do for you physiologically, and how can you use this practice to benefit your health for the long term rather than just a quick fix?

Detox protocols are a popular topic in fitness circles, often marketed as ways to jumpstart or accelerate nutrition plans. Social media platforms are flooded with detox options, from supplements to juice cleanses, but before you buy into the hype, it's important to understand the actual impact—or lack thereof—these methods can have.

The Body's Natural Detox System

First and foremost, let's be clear on one thing. Our bodies are well capable of removing toxins and unwanted substances naturally. In fact, we have entire organs and organ systems that exist precisely for this purpose. Our liver is the protagonist of this process, but the kidneys, skin, lungs, and digestive system also play crucial roles. I mention this because we need to understand that human physiology is amazing and extremely efficient in design. My body is working in detoxification processes as I write this, as is yours while you read. Anything else that you may try to do would be an effort to expedite the process. This is a completely different concept than suggesting that if you take a particular supplement, you initiate detox. It's essential to recognize that the main detox "players" are your organs, not supplements or external interventions.

Popular Detox Methods: Myths and Realities

Let’s break down some common detox approaches:

  1. Fasting
This has become extremely popular thanks to claims of the benefits of time-restricted feeding based on the idea that our ancestors functioned optimally with intermittent food scarcity. While fasting may benefit organ efficiency, its effectiveness depends on how it’s implemented—such as 12-18 hour daily fasts or full-day fasting.
  1. Juicing
This camp argues that limiting calorie consumption to only fruit and vegetable juices for a period of time aids the body in its detoxification functions. Both fruits and veggies are very high in vitamins and minerals which can boost immune and digestive health. This is one of the main reasons why it is believed to help with the process. In addition, juicing plans claim that their protocols actually improve the body’s ability to flush out toxins.
  1. Supplements & Herbs
Many believe certain herbs or supplements enhance organ efficiency. While some substances may have mild supportive effects, they do not replace the body's natural detox functions.
  1. Cleansing
These methods expedite waste elimination through the use of laxatives, enemas, or what is popularly referred to as colonics, but don’t add detoxifying benefits. They fast-track the removal of waste already prepared for excretion.
  1. Saunas
The theory is that elevating body temperature to a certain point, for certain durations will promote the elimination of toxins through the skin. Of course, higher body temperature also means elevated blood flow and respiratory rate which may increase our organs’ efficiency.
  1. Avoiding Certain Foods
From a detox perspective, it is believed that short periods of avoiding certain types of food will allow for the body to expel some of the byproducts of said foods. It is important to note that this is not meant to suggest that one type of diet is healthier than the other, but rather that brief stints of limited nutrients, mainly saturated fats and protein, may be beneficial.

The Real Reason Behind Detox Plans

For most, the desire to detox stems from a wish to lose weight or compensate for indulgent weekends. While detox plans often result in weight loss, this is largely due to reduced calorie intake, not the magical properties of the protocol itself. If you go into a significant caloric deficit for a period of time, you most likely will see acute weight loss. Unfortunately, the weight loss is often temporary, as most of it comes from water weight, which rebounds once normal eating resumes.

The Long-Term Solution

If you decide to detox, pair it with habits that support your body’s natural detox functions in the long run. Adopting basic lifestyle guidelines (BLGs) can enhance detox processes without having to make extra sacrifices.

Here are four foundational habits:

  • Hydration: Drink 50-60% of your body weight in ounces of water daily. Water helps the liver and kidneys process and eliminate waste effectively.
  • Sunlight: Get 20-30 minutes of direct sunlight daily to boost Vitamin D levels, which support immunity and fight harmful microbes. It’s free!
  • Exercise: Regular physical activity improves circulation, raises body temperature, and enhances lymphatic movement, all aiding natural detox.
  • Nourishment: Eat high-quality, clean foods while limiting highly processed ones to reduce toxin intake.

Before jumping on the detox bandwagon, understand that consistent behaviors will yield positive results. Fast-tracking and remedial approaches provide short-term solutions with increased risk. Most detox results are a byproduct of caloric deficits or water loss—not the protocol itself. If you’re looking for long-term solutions to avoid disease and ward off entropy, don’t look to commercialized alternatives. Instead, focus on applying these basics, EVERY DAY.
